Our History

Women’s Cancers Relief Foundation (WCRF) is a Rwandan non-governmental organization founded on April 2, 2018, by Mr. Jean Paul BALINDA, a public health expert with a background in General Nursing and Population studies. His inspiration came from firsthand experiences while working with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) under the Ministry of Health, where he saw the devastating impact of late cancer diagnosis.

Two specific cases, including a nurse with a long-ignored breast mass and a woman who tragically passed away before receiving treatment, motivated Jean Paul to act. These cases reflected broader systemic issues like lack of awareness, barriers to accessing cancer care, and the absence of survivor’s support systems.

Since its inception, WCRF — in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre — has supported public health facilities to screen women for breast and cervical cancer, established cancer survivor support groups in six districts, financed income-generating activities for cancer survivors, and provided financial assistance for women in need through the payment of community health insurance, coverage of co-payment fees, transportation, and accommodation.

What We Stand For

Our Mission

Our mission is to contribute to the fight against women’s cancers through education, advocacy, and patient support. We strive to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, provide support to women and families affected by cancer, and advocate for policies that improve access to cancer care.

Our Vision

We envision a world where all women impacted by cancer achieve optimal wellness, where all women have access to high-quality cancer care, and no woman dies from preventable cancers.

Core Values
  • Empathy: We support women with compassion, understanding the emotional and physical toll cancer takes.
  • Equity: We ensure all women, regardless of economic status, have access to cancer screening and treatment.
  • Collaboration: We work closely with healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities to maximize our impact.
  • Accountability: We are committed to transparency in our operations and responsible use of funds.
